As we get further and further into the story, it get harder and harder to understand because of Marlow's choppy and self serving way of speech. Also, his mental state is slowly getting worse. The psychological journey is about how Marlow runs away from or faces his fears.

Heart of Darkness #6
Right now Marlow would not agree with Kurtz's message because he is very shaky and hesitant in the way e speaks. Kurtz's painting is a representation of a twisted liberty and justice. Although the woman holds a torch, she is blind; blind to what is happening around her. This is an allusion to the Europeans and their blindness the the effects of their actions.
#2 Heart of Darkness
Marlow begins his tale of a journey to the heart of darkness with an account of London in "very old times..." becasue he wants to contrast how barbaricly backwards and savage London was and how they were the ones colonizing. It is funny how people that are so morally and civilly unstable themselves believe that their way of life must be forced unto others.
